cALLING ALL ARTISTS
Hooks & Reels welcomes new voices — writers, storytellers, and musicians — who want to take part in our evenings of story and song.
Hooks & Reels events are hosted by Lara O’Brien, an AsIAm Champion, and include the AsIAm Guide, a small introduction to what to expect on the night.
If you’d like to read or perform at a future Hooks & Reels event, get in touch and learn how to submit your story or song idea.

Hooks & Reels is an evening of story and song that brings together community writers and musicians to share their passion for storytelling and music.
Rooted in the Howth Writing Workshops and led by founder Lara O’Brien, the gatherings offer a unique setting and ambiance that inspire creativity and connection. Each event celebrates the age-old tradition of sharing life stories through words and melody, leaving audiences feeling inspired and connected to the power of storytelling and the talent of our Howth musicians.
Since our very first Hooks & Reels night, every event has sold out — showcasing just how much people love coming together to share stories, songs, and good company.

F.A.Q.
Not necessarily. The Howth Writing Workshops are a great way to connect, learn, and share your work, but you don’t have to attend one before submitting a story.
Writers who join the workshops often go on to perform at Hooks & Reels, but submissions are open to anyone who feels inspired by storytelling and song.Yes! Many of our performers are reading their work aloud for the very first time. Hooks & Reels is a friendly, supportive space where the audience truly wants to hear your story. Everyone in the room — writers, musicians, and guests — understands what it takes to share something personal.
Do I need to memorise it?
No. Most writers read directly from their printed page or notebook. You can mark small pauses or pacing notes in your text if it helps.
What happens on the night?
-
You’ll be introduced by the host.
-
You’ll walk up to the microphone and read your piece.
-
Afterward, there’s warm applause and often music to follow.
There’s no critique or Q&A — just appreciation and connection.
Can I practise beforehand?
Yes — and it’s encouraged!
Try reading your piece aloud a few times at home or at a Howth Writing Workshop. Practising helps you find rhythm and confidence.
What should I do if I feel nervous?
Take a few deep breaths before you start — everyone’s cheering you on. If you lose your place or need to pause, that’s fine. This is storytelling, not theatre — authenticity matters more than polish.
Will someone help me on the night?
Yes. The Hooks & Reels team will be there to guide you — from where to stand, to how to adjust the microphone. You’ll also meet other writers performing that evening.
Remember:
Hooks & Reels isn’t about performance perfection — it’s about community, connection, and courage. Sharing your story is what makes the night special.
-
Yes! Hooks & Reels isn’t only for writers — it’s a celebration of creative collaboration. Each event blends story and song, so we welcome musicians, singers, and artists who want to add their voice, sound, or art to the storytelling experience.
Send a short introduction and tell us what you’d like to bring to Hooks & Reels. If you’re a musician, include a sample or link to your music.
